General Information about Abu Dhabi for Meeting Planners and Event Professionals
Abu Dhabi is the capital and the 2nd most populated city of the United Arab Emirates (after Dubai), with a population of almost three million. Its rapid urbanization and development, together with the high average income of its inhabitants, make it a large and advanced metropolis. Planned in 1967 under the guidance of Sheikh Zayed by the Japanese architect Katsuhiko Takahashi, Abu Dhabi is currently the seat of the UAE government, of the UAE president, and of his famous Emiri Family. Its architecture includes a large number of skyscrapers, most of them located in the city’s financial district, such as the Etihad Towers, the Investment Authority Tower, the Baynunah Tower, and the National Bank of Abu Dhabi’s headquarters. Another important architectural landmark is the opulent Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Abu Dhabi holds 9% of the global oil reserves and 5% of the world’s natural gas. Important cultural institutions from Abu Dhabi include the Cultural Foundation, home to the UAE Public Library and Cultural Center, the National Theater, the Abu Dhabi Classical Music Society, and the Emirates Foundation, which offers grants in support of arts, sciences, technology, social development and environmental protection.

Abu Dhabi hosts hundreds of yearly conferences and exhibitions in famous venues, such as the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), the Persian Gulf’s largest exhibition center.
