Hong Kong (officially called the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China) is an autonomous territory located in East Asia, on the Eastern side of the Pearl River’s estuary. Formerly a colony of the British Empire, Hong Kong has now two official languages – Chinese and English. Originally a conglomeration of fishing and farming villages, Hong Kong is nowadays one of the most important financial centres and trading ports from the world. It has the highest number of skyscrapers in the world (317), including the towers hosting the International Commerce Centre and the International Finance Centre. The city is also famous for its colonial and European architecture, including its older government buildings. With ten universities on its territory, some of them established during the colonial period (e.g. the University of Hong Kong), Hong Kong is considered a mixture of Eastern and Western values, where the traditional Chinese focus on family and education is combined with progressive Western ideals, such as that of economic freedom. It has an extremely high Human Development Index ranking, ranking 7 in the world’s top life expectancy places. Hong Kong is also an important international shopping destination, famous for its artisanal tailors and its Temple Street Night Market.
